 FAQ

Here you'll find some frequently asked questions that I've experienced as a clinician. If you have other questions, please reach out by clicking here and sending us an email!

  • Are you a chain?
We are not a chain! Headway Physical Therapy is currently the sole proprietorship of Dr. Casey Roy - a North Carolina native with a vision of creating a clinic with a focus on social responsibility, community integration, and providing the specialized care that Headway PT's patients deserve.
  • I can't afford cash-based services. Do you offer discounts?
Current Discounts Provided: 1 - Grand Opening Discount (appointments booked from September to November 2024 will be 25% off! Use discount code: HPT2024 2 - Senior Discounts (65 years old +): 50% 3 - Veteran Discounts (must provide proof of honorable discharge): 50% 4 - Active Duty Service Members (must provide proof of current service): 25% 5 - Student Discounts (must provide proof of enrollment) 25% 6 - Community Discounts: these are "easter egg" discounts. Scattered throughout various local businesses in the Triangle area are Headway Physical Therapy business cards with a unique discount code on them that can be used only once. As a local business myself, I hope to promote the patronage of other local business as well! **Please call before booking an appointment if you plan to use a senior, veteran, or ADSM discount. You will need to receive a unique code to use at checkout that is unique to you and cannot be re-used.** None of those apply to you, but you still can't afford care? I believe the community comes first. As much as I (Dr. Casey) would love to form this business into a 501c3 non-profit business at some time, right now (with full disclosure) I'm not in a position financially to afford continuous charity or reduced cost care. HOWEVER, on a case-by-case basis, if you can demonstrate proof of hardship, I will absolutely consider taking on your care for reduced or no cost - I just can't promise that I will be able to. My goal by the end of my first year of business is to be able to provide 100 therapy sessions to disadvantaged people across the Triangle Community. That may seem small, but I'm taking steps to try my best to ensure everyone has access to care, whether that be through my own business, or advocating for improved health insurance policies so that every can receive the care they deserve.
  • Should I still take my pain medication, migraine preventative medication, or migraine rescue medication if I begin physical therapy?
YES. Any medication you are prescribed by your physician, you should always continue to take until they say otherwise. Some medications when stopped abruptly can have serious side-effects. If you believe you are having an adverse reaction to a medication, it's recommended that you be seen at an emergency room to determine appropriateness for continued or discontinued use of any medication. In most cases, migraine medications in conjunction with physical therapy is the best solution to managing your symptoms and having the best outcomes possible. For some, physical therapy is enough to stave off the initial need for medication all together.
  • Does your clinic treat more than just neck pain, headache, and migraines?
If you ask any physical therapist, our least favorite answer in PT school when we would ask a question is "it depends." However, "it depends" is a very appropriate answer in this situation. Dr. Casey right now is the sole clinician at Headway PT and is specializing in neck pain, headaches, and migraines, but she has a background in treating limb loss, orthopedic conditions, chronic pain, balance, and gait deviations. On a case-by-case basis, other conditions may be accepted for evaluation and treatment at Headway PT. If you're unsure if a condition you need treatment for can be treated here, please schedule a free 15 minute consult today! Please note, our current facilities are not ADA compliant as they are on the second floor of a building with no elevators. At-home care will potentially be an option in the near future to help those with physical disabilities receive the care they deserve! At some point, Headway PT will be taking on more physical therapist who have backgrounds in various clinical settings. Headway PT will also be taking on a lymphedema therapist in the near future who also can provide personal training and massage therapy services.
  • Do physicians get a "kick-back" for referring me to you?
NO! In fact, it is illegal for providers to receive monetary compensation for referrals. Anytime a provider refers you to us, it's because they believe in the value of the care we provide to our patients.
  • How does physical therapy treat migraines and headaches? I thought physical therapist could only treat joint pain and weakness?
While the majority of physical therapist specialize in providing traditional orthopedic care for people who've undergone an injury, surgery, or have conditions such as osteoarthritis, physical therapist actually has a wide range of services we can provide. For a long time, migraines were widely misunderstood, and in many ways, still are. What we do know is that by therapists utilizing hands-on manual techniques to mobilize soft tissue and joints in the cervical and thoracic spine, integrating care with physical exercise to improve posture, and utilizing relaxation strategies that help make physiological changes to the nervous system, physical therapy has proven to be very effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of migraines.
  • Why cash-based physical therapy?
Cash-based physical therapy can be an excellent option at Headway Physical Therapy for several reasons: First, it allows for one-on-one care in contrast to corporate clinics who schedule 2-3 patients within a one hour time frame to each therapist. Cash based services often result in more personalized and high-quality care. Second, since we don't rely on insurance reimbursements, our therapists can focus entirely on the patient's needs without adhering to the constraints imposed by insurance companies which occasionally lead to unethical practices resulting in worse outcomes for patients. Third, cash-based physical therapy often eliminates hidden costs and billing surprises, providing clear and upfront pricing, which can be more cost-effective in the long run. The average physical therapy co-pay is $45. Most insurance-based clinics will encourage their physical therapist to have you come into the clinic 2-3 times regardless if you require that frequency of care or not. The majority of care plans average around 8-12 weeks. On the low end, at 2 times a week for 8 weeks, thats $720. On the high end, thats $1620. Often that care is also given while another patient is being treated at the same time as you, and insurance policies are constraining your therapist on what services they can provide. Here, our evaluations are $129, and our treatment sessions are $100, and even less if you can provide proof of financial hardship. That's 7 total sessions you could have with one-on-one care, for the same price you'd pay with insurance, and with the caveat of having to deal with the split attention of the therapist who are trying to juggle between multiple patients. At Headway Physical Therapy, we are committed to empowering your path to a higher quality of life, and our cash-based model aligns perfectly with that mission by prioritizing your health and wellness over insurance bureaucracy.
  • Your clinic is on the second floor; is it accessible for people with physical disabilities that prevent the use of stairs?
Unfortunately there are no possible ways to get into the clinic without using stairs. If you have a disability that prevents you from being able to arrive in person at our clinic, please call to discuss other options. Everyone deserves care!
  • What does a typical treatment session look like?
The start: Each treatment session will start with a conversation on how you've been since the last time you've been seen at the clinic. During: Depending on the care you need, either manual therapy will be performed, exercises, relaxation techniques, continued planning, or a combination of all those put together. After: We can either make more appointments together, and plan for you to independently to manage your care!
  • What other services do you offer or plan to offer in the future?
Right now, Headway Physical Therapy is strictly offering examination and treatment of neck pain, headache, and migraine conditions. Soon we will be onboarding a physical therapy assistant who is also a licensed massage therapist with a certification to treat lymphedema patients, and will also be offering personal training services.
  • How do I book an appointment?
The first appointment that should be booked is an initial examination. Without an initial examination, no personalized plan of care can be developed to ensure the best outcomes possible. Following the initial exam, treatment sessions will be booked based on the plan that was derived. Once the original plan of care is complete, maintenance and wellness sessions can be booked that will help maintain your progress. Soon we will be able to offer massage therapy and personal training as well! Click the button now to book your appointment today!
  • What is a maintenance and wellness session?
Once you've completed your plan of care and no longer required skilled physical therapy services, you may either work with myself (Dr. Casey), another physical therapist, or our massage therapist (coming soon!) to provide care that will maintain your progress and prevent future exacerbations of your condition from occurring. If you participate in maintenance and wellness sessions at least once a month, for putting your healthcare first, you will be provided a 25% discount for an initial examination and further on treatment sessions should the need for skilled therapy related to your previously treated condition arise again.
  • Should I get a free consult, and what is it?
Free consults are encouraged for EVERYONE who plans to book an initial examination with Headway Physical Therapy. This will be a free 15 minute phone call with me to quickly discuss what your concerns are. I will give you a completely honest answer if I think you could benefit from the services at Headway Physical Therapy. Sometimes another provider may be more appropriate for you based off that discussion and I will recommend that path forward instead. After a free consult, if I believe you should come in for our services, and you've completed an initial examination with me - if I don't believe I can improve your quality of life at the end of the exam with the care provided at Headway Physical Therapy, I will provide a full refund and refer you to a provider I believe can help you more. Your time is valuable, and your health is my priority, not your wallet.
  • When and how do I pay? And is there a cancellation fee?
Being a new clinic, right now payment is due at the time of booking an appointment. Currently, utilizing the website to book is the only means of being able to pay; the website accepts all major credit cards, apple pay, and google pay. There is no cash or check option at this time. I cannot currently offer refunds if an appointment is cancelled, but as long as you provide 24 hours notice, I will reschedule you into another time slot without an additional charge. Why can I not refund for your cancellation? Headway PT is a new and small business. To keep us up and running, the reliability of cash flow from our bookings is vital to ensure we can plan effectively so that we can remain in business and help the most amount of people possible. Last minute cancellations also take a spot away from another patient who may need care. We understand that emergency situations occur, which is why Headway PT will always try our best to reschedule. We value our patients time, and respect that you are choosing to put value into your care with us. We appreciate your understanding in this matter, and if you have further questions, please reach out by going to our contact page and sending us an email!
  • What does an initial examination look like?
Before your initial exam... At the time of booking, you will be prompted to fill out a series of forms that should give a good idea on what exactly you're coming in for so your exam can be effectively tailored for you. Arriving to the clinic... Please arrive 5-10 minutes early if possible to ensure you get parking. If you get confused or lost looking for the clinic, please call! The exam itself... Is a one hour exam that will start with a subjective history of your condition, followed by a physical examination that will look at range of motion and strength, test for "red flags" that may warrant referral to other providers, and special tests that may help to identify a more concise diagnosis - be it cervical radiculopathy, thoracic outlet syndrome, cervicogenic headache, or true migraines - by the end of the exam, we'll go over education about objective findings of the exam. At the end of the session, a shared decision making model will be used to guide the plan of care we'll create. Because people have different schedules and financial capabilities, each patient's plan will be unique to them. There's no "package deal discount" that some cash-base clinics offer because I believe those encourage clinicians to force more treatment sessions on someone than what might be necessary. I'll only recommend what I believe you genuinely need. From there, we'll make follow-up treatment session appointments. After the exam... You can either book follow-up treatment appointments on the website with me, or you can choose to book follow-up appointments at a later time. You can also choose to discontinue care if you feel physical therapy services aren't right for you. If that is your option, I only ask that you let me know, and I will understand. I'll never try to pressure anyone into something they don't find valuable!
